Description: Call for the participation on the activities for the International Day of Peasant Struggle.

On April 17 we commemorate the International Day of the Peasant Struggle in memory and homage to the peasants that have given their lives struggling for a better world, for the Agrarian Reform and for Food Sovereignty, for the defense and care of nature, seeds and water.

On April 17, 1996, at Dorado dos Carajas, Brazil, nineteen farmers organized in the MST were assassinated, and today 17 years away those responsible are still at large without receiving any punishment, at times when we witness an offensive from the transnationals over our continent, with the aim on the part of the financial capitalism to privatize and transform land, agriculture and nature into a commodity, peasant struggles and resistence are multiplied in all regions. The agro-businesses with their rampant ambition have been responding with violence, illegality and corruption, taking away the lives of hundred of peasants in México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Paraguay, where we see the army and the police assassinating and violating the human rights of peasants, but also in Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, paramilitaries and gunmen are assassinating peasants when the organizations confront the plundering by agro-mining transnational and local oligarchies. To this violence we should add a criminalization process of the peasant struggles and a huge offensive on Creole seeds, in which new draft laws all around the continent intend to legalize and use at mass scale transgenic products and to hinder the use and distribution of our traditional seeds.

From the CLOC-VC we will take actions in over 23 countries with out organizations, friends and allies to continue the dialogue with the peoples and cities on the occasion of the International Day of the Peasant Struggle, within the framework of the call by Vía Campesina Internacional to all continents, our mobilizations shall have a continental and world nature.

To render homage to our martyrs and since the struggle continues we are launching an appeal to mobilize against land grabbing, against the accumulation of our water, of our traditional seeds, against criminalization of our protest.

We are calling to raise our voices from our basis to express once again that we are to defend our territories, we shall continue denouncing and we will continue our militant activity for a social transformation, where Food Sovereignty with agro-ecological production, a comprehensive agrarian reform are the pillars in this process of popular countryside.

We are also calling to hold solidarity actions with the people of Paraguay, to stage mobilizations to the embassies of Paraguay, to denounce the government engaged in a military coup, the chasing of peasants and to present a letter demanding the release for political prisoners and justice on the Massacre of Curuguaty.

We are calling to unite our voices, to socialize local and national actions to enable seeing them all through the continent and also at the international level in La Vía Campesina, within the framework of the International Day of Peasant Struggle.

Against the plundering by the capital and by the Empire, America is struggling!

For the land and the sovereignty of our peoples America is struggling!
